The Perfect Song

In my personal opinion, Across the Universe by The Beatles is the perfect song. Although the song’s a Lennon-McCartney collaboration, it’s mostly Lennon’s work, my favourite version being the Rarities’ album one. I’m fully aware that, strictly speaking, Across the Universe is not a perfect song (the beatles weren’t music geniuses, didn’t have perfect technique or advanced musician skills), but what makes this song perfect is the feel that evokes, this version particularly.

The nature sounds; birds chirping and running water, have the ability to sooth you and, in a way, gets you in the mood for the beautiful vibe of the song. Even though John’s voice is… peculiar; it is the perfect complement to the odd-sounding guitars on the background. I particularly love the lyrics, specially the indian mantra Jai Guru Deva Om; even if the listener doesn’t understand its meaning, the repetition of it plus the verse “nothing gonna change my world” will inevitably affect him or her and maybe even transport them to an entirely new state of mind.

Across the Universe is one of those songs that will never get old; a lot of other artist from different generation have rediscovered it  and made their own version (some of them are very good, actually), but still, the original Beatles’ version will always hold an indescribable and irreproducible feel, a mystique that makes it truly perfect.
